Egg Tonicity
Tonicity is the concentration of solutions that determines the direction and extent of diffusion, the two types of solutions are hypertonic and hypotonic. The effect a hypertonic solution causes water to move from inside to outside of the cell which makes the cell shrink. The effects of hypotonic causes the water to move from outside the cell to inside the cell which causes the cell to increase in size.
To begin our research we had to remove the shell by putting it in vinegar, the equation to this is CaCO3+ 2H+ -> Ca+2 + H2O +CO2. My group predicted that the hypertonic solution would cause the egg to shrink and that the hypotonic solution would cause the egg to grow. After our experiment we have concluded that our prediction is right, the hypertonic solution caused the egg to shrink while the hypotonic solution caused the egg to grow, and the data to show this is located below. |
